BioBuilder Summer 3-day workshops prepare educators to bring biological engineering and synthetic biology into their classrooms and laboratories, including:

 

  • Lectures that connect the science, technology, engineering, and math aspects of these fields.

  • Labs and classroom activities taught from the online BioBuilder.org resource and the BioBuilder textbook published by O’Reilly.

  • Discussion with members of the university research community.

  • Activities that address human practice questions such as the safety, security, economics and wisdom of engineering novel biological systems.

  • Activities that address the nuts and bolts of running a BioBuilderClub or iGEM team.

  • Attendees receive a Spanish translation of the BioBuilder textbook, all workshop classroom materials in ready to use formats, lunch each day, and a certificate of completion.

 

Who should apply?  This workshop is intended for:

 

  • High school and middle school Biology and STEM teachers, including those looking for new ways to teach college-bound students.

  • College-level instructors looking for classroom and lab curricula to include in a biotechnology-style class.

  • Science Club leaders, in particular anyone looking for ways to bring cutting-edge content to students with a variety interests from math to biology to electronics.

  • This workshop is only available to teachers in México.

Lead Instructors:

Dr. Carlos Vera-Hernandez, Professor of Medicine/Biomedical Engineering/Nanotechnology, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) / Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana (ITT)

Dr. Vera is an enthusiast of synthetic biology.  His main goal is to outreach talented students in the Mexico – U.S. border area and motivate them to follow a career in STEM. He holds a BSE in Electrical Engineering (ITT), M.D. (UABC) and Ph.D, in Bioengineering (UCSD).

 

Dr. Rebekah Ravgiala, Biology Teacher, BioBuilder Board Member, Tyngsborough High School

Rebekah teaches Biology and Advanced Placement Biology at Tyngsborough High School in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, USA. She holds a B.A. in Biology and a doctorate in Mathematics and Science Education. She has been actively involved in the BioBuilder community since 2011, and currently serves as a member of its Board of Directors. She is proud to deliver BioBuilder content to both students and teachers because it is accessible and modular, and inspires students to combine the skills of science with the process of engineering in the context of living systems.
