Summary

New from BioBuilder: Synthetic biologists have engineered a strain of baker’s yeast to produce β-carotene, a nutrient that is converted to Vitamin A in the body.  They expected that yeast that produce β-carotene would form bright orange colonies, but instead they sometimes grow as red, yellow or white colonies. In this workshop, participants will use polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and agarose gel electrophoresis to explore the differences in the DNA of different colored yeast colonies.   We will also discuss the ethics of engineering food using the tools of synthetic biology.

Intended Age Group: 10-16 years old. This workshop is scheduled for December 15, 2019, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Required background: Some understanding of cells and cell function. A working knowledge about DNA as the coding language of cells. Familiarity with a laboratory environment is helpful but not required.

When registering, please enter the name of the participant as it should appear on a name badge. A separate link is provided for chaperones, who must register but not as a paying attendee. Chaperones may register at http://bit.ly/Dec15KWCChaperone

LabCentral does not offer free parking. There is very limited meter parking on Main Street and other adjacent streets. Visitors are encouraged to use the MBTA. LabCentral is a half mile walk directly down Main Street from the Kendall Square/MIT Station on the Red Line and a half mile walk down Mass Ave to Main Street from the Central Square Station on the Red Line.

A minimum of 10 attendees will be needed to run this workshop.

Cancellation Policy: Registration may be cancelled up to 48 hours prior to the start of the workshop. In such cases, a refund of the registration fee will be issued, less any incurred payment processing charges. We are unable to refund registration fees for cancellations received less than 48 hours prior to the start of the workshop.

If BioBuilder cancels a workshop for any reason, we will provide as much advance notice as possible. You may elect to transfer your registration to a future workshop, if space is available; otherwise we will refund the registration fee in full.
