The Project Development Studio was created for teams of high school students who want to design biotechnologies that might change the world. Differing from years past, we've repurposed the resources from our BioBuilderClub program to provide follow on support to teams who want to further pursue their BioBuilderClub or Idea Accelerator projects. The PDS provides students with the ability to connect with like-minded students, and develop skills in project planning and execution, professional level research and communication, and can be a wonderful way to explore careers in bioengineering. Teams will also have a chance to do lab investigations as they dig into their biodesign ideas, exploring variables that influence antibiotic sensitivity.


This program is intended for high school teams who have either:

  • Completed the Idea Accelerator series, OR
  • Participated in previous years as a BioBuilderClub team.


The Development Studio provides teams with:

  • Ten (10) hours of consultation and feedback on project ideas and assistance with continuation of the design process, from a dedicated Expert Consultant (a practicing bioengineer from the BioBuilder network);
  • An electronic copy of the BioBuilder textbook;
  • A Carolina Biological Supply demo kit for every team's teacher AND mentor;
  • The opportunity to present their work through the virtual Final Assembly, and an opportunity to document their work in BioBuilder’s Project Library.



  • Teachers/leaders may register as many project teams as they wish, but each project team must be registered seperately. For each project team you will need to provide their BioDesign topic area, the number of students on the team, and a list of all the students on the team.
    • After registering project team(s), teachers/leaders will recieve a PDS Student Registration link that each individual student must complete to finalize enrollment in the Project Development Studio.
  • Using the demo kit provided to teachers and mentors (essentially an Ames test), teams should brainstorm and investigate a variable that might influence antibiotic sensitivity (age of the cells, temperature of incubation, pre-exposure to an agent); this experiment should be part of the work presented at the Final Assembly.
    • Teams attending in-person classes should carry out these investigations at a meeting.
    • Fully virtual teams may elect to have their teacher and/or their mentor carry out the experiment, sharing video or pictures of the results.
  • Teams will deliver pre-recorded video or audio presentations of their completed projects and their ideation and research process at the virtual Final Assembly, which will include a poster session.
    • Final Assembly to be held March 25, 2021
  • Teams may opt to pursue publication of their work in BioTreks, an online peer-reviewed synthetic biology journal for high school students.



  • Fee per team (max. 10 students/team) = $400.00
  • Additional consultation hours = $50.00/hr (4-hour minimum)
